Final Summary Report
Full Report: Earthquake
Risks and Mitigation in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut
Region (April
2005)
( 32mb pdf)
.
This report presents the results of a multi-year study that addresses the risks of an earthquake in the New York City area. It provides basic information on the effect of an earthquake by identifying a range of impacts using HAZUS, FEMA's methodology for performing loss estimations. Soil information for the NY-NJ-CT region was assembled, as was a detailed building inventory (complete for Manhattan and less detailed for the surrounding region). Based on this information, several earthquake scenarios and their probable consequences were identified and modeled. The results and recommendations are presented in the report for use in developing and implementing cost-effective risk management plans to reduce potential damage and losses.

Geologic Component: Earthquake Loss Estimation Study for New Jersey
Download Earthquake Loss Estimation Studies by the New Jersey Geological Survey
Geologic and topographic data were acquired and analyzed for six counties in New Jersey to compile maps of seismic soil classes, liquefaction susceptibility, and landslide susceptibility. This data was entered into a HAZUS model for each census tract in the county. The HAZUS model was run with the upgraded geologic data for earthquake magnitudes of 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5 and 7. The results are contained within each report. The counties are: Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic and Union.
